From July 19 – 20, the state of Quintana Roo and Cancun will host the Mayan Opera Festival 2012 inspired by the “Maya year.” The concerts will delight tourists and the general public with operas performed by some of the best singers and musicians from around the country.
Opera Maya is an international festival with a summer school program based in Quintana Roo, Mexico. This event helps communities in the state of Quintana Roo and some of the top international performers to support diverse and multicultural encounters. The event encourages and stimulates creativity with the local musicians of the Maya region to celebrate and share their culture and heritage.
Among the festivals’ stars are the opera conductor of Linz Austria, opera singers from the Metropolitan of New York and Arturo Marquez, a multiple award-winning Mexican composer. Musicians and artists of the Maya regions as well as the Youth Orchestra of the City of Guatemala and Simon Bolivar of Venezuela are also invited, as well as the National Orchestra of Denmark and the National Mexican Orchestra. The concerts are free of charge and will take place at the Parque de las Palapas in central Cancun at 8 pm on July 19 and 20.
