Whale Sharks arrive in Holbox one of Cancun’s Treasures of the Caribbean

On May 15th Cancun and one of its “Treasures” Isla Holbox,  welcomed the world’s largest species of fish- the Whale Shark.

Swimming with the Whale Shark, the largest fish on our planet is a dream that can only become a reality in few places throughout the world, such as Mexico, Belize and Australia.  A mere 45 minute boat ride from Cancun, Mexico and you can enjoy this unique experience with one of nature’s most interesting creatures.

The best time to be a part of this fantastic adventure is during the months of July and August. The presence of this creature in the northern areas of Isla Holbox,  Isla Contoy and Cabo Catoche.  This is thanks to the nutrient filled water, which generates a large quantity of available food. Adventurers from all over the world come to Cancun and especially Holbox to take advantage of this phenomenon knowing that the opportunity to observe the dynamics of this species is limited to these summer months.

Known as a migrant species, those who study the migration of whale sharks are still uncertain where they travel from or where they’re heading next. All we know is that whale sharks enjoy traveling through warm waters and tropical seas around the globe.

The Whale Shark’s impressive size and ample mouth extends to almost 5 feet when opened.  Measuring up to 59 feet and weighing 15 tons, this is the biggest fish in the world! These characteristics are just a few of the reasons why this creature is so unique.

Those choosing to experience the wonder of swimming with whale sharks are accompanied by experts who provide all the necessary information to better understand the behavior of these creatures. Once familiarized with the animal, the tourists can jump off the boat accompanied by a guide and snorkel to see the Whale Shark up close. The experience is truly amazing and there is no need to be afraid since this shark feeds exclusively on tiny organisms known as plankton, therefore they are completely harmless towards humans.

A hands-on encounter with the marine world is even more attainable in Cancun, Quintana Roo—home to the second-largest barrier reef in the world because of the diverse marine life, crystal clear turquoise waters and stunning underwater rock formations all making Cancun the ideal destination!

  1. I took a whale shark swim tour last summer out of Cancun and it was an amazing experience! We decided to go with a local company that leaves from Puerto Juarez, the Cancun ferry port that offers service to Isla Mujeres. We are so glad we decided to go from there, instead of trekking all the way to far off Isla Holbox and spending an entire day to swim with what are essentially the same whale sharks. Instead we spent less time traveling to get to and from the tour, and more time in the water looking at sea life that included colorful tropical fish, rays, pods of dolphins and a sea turtle. The best part is that we were back at our resort by 2 p.m. The most important thing is to make sure you choose a company that is fully licensed to conduct the tours because they take safety very seriously. The tour company we went with is:
