This charity golf tournament will take place on June 9, 10 & 11 at Playa Mujeres Golf Club. Lady golfers from all over Mexico, the United States, Canada and South Korea will be traveling to Cancún to compete in the annual Elizabeth Norman Sutton Charity Golf Tournament.
Organized by Royal Resorts, the tournament honors the memory of Elizabeth Sutton, wife of Richard D. Sutton, one of the Royal Resorts directors. A Cancún resident for 20 years, Mrs. Sutton was a keen golfer and a deeply committed campaigner always looking for ways to improve the lives of the most vulnerable members of society. After her death in 1998, a trust was established in her name to support charities and community projects in the Cancún area. Last year, the tournament winners presented checks for $20,000 US apiece to the Cancún General Hospital and to Grupo Desafío de Quintana Roo cancer awareness program. Since the tournament began, $250,000 US has been donated to local causes including several children’s homes, schools for mentally challenged children, centers for the victims of domestic violence and the MESE Street Children Protection Program.
This is the tenth anniversary of this popular sporting event and organizers are expecting a record turnout. Not only do players have fun on and off the greens, by participating they are helping local institutions and NGO’s in their work with Cancún’s poorest inhabitants.
The tournament is for amateur lady golfers only and is played according to the British Stableford Rules. Apart from the overall winner and the winners of Flight A, B, C and D categories, prizes are also awarded for the straightest drive on Hole 16, the longest drive on Hole 9 and the closest to the pin on Holes 3, 8 and 12 registered for each day’s play.
Playa Mujeres Golf Club is an 18-hole par 72 7,218 yard golf course in Cancun. It was designed by Greg Norman and is both challenging and beautiful. The course has a spectacular setting, surrounded by mangroves and forest and has sweeping views of the Caribbean and the Chacmochuch Lagoon. Four holes overlook the beaches and several others have testing water hazards, bunkers and even a resident crocodile called Big Al. Playa Mujeres is also the first Mexican golf course to be endorsed by the Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWG).
